WATCH MOVEMENTS: DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MECHANICAL & QUARTZ

So one question we get asked a lot is what exactly is a watch movement and what is the difference between a quartz movement and a mechanical movement ?

Ok so a watch movement is also known as a “caliber” and that very thing is the engine of the watch which serves as a powerhouse to make everything in the watch work and function correctly.

It is important to know that there are numerous types of watch movements however all of them will fall into only two categories: quartz or mechanical. One easy way to tell what the movement type is would be by observing the second hand on the watch display. On a mechanical watches the second hand have a smooth sweeping seconds motion whereas on a quartz watches, the second hand has a tick-tick motion that moves once per second.

So which watch movement is better, a Quartz or a Mechanical ?

Well this is a great question and to be honest they are both equally good so it is a matter of personal preference.

Quartz watches use a battery as their primary energy source. So quartz watches are easier to fix and maintain and they tend to be much cheaper than mechanical watches.

Mechanical watches on the other hand are much more sophisticated. This watch movement is usually found in most luxury type of watches. They are created with a great craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Hope this post gives you a better understanding on the different types of watch movements.
